Lag Issues Resolved SeanReborn

You may remember a week or two ago when the lag in Bootleggers was near unbearable and people were screaming for a solution. I know what you’re thinking: “Sean! You fool! The lag is all but gone! This article is redundant!”. Well, yes, the lag is greatly improved. But I thought it would be a good idea to let you all know what the problem was and how it was resolved.

I asked Sabin for an official report about a week ago and he told me “We believe the lag and downtime were a result of DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service)”. He went on to tell me that the Bootleggers staff suspected it was “in conjunction (or contracted by) the owners of specific market competitors of Bootleggers”. Basically, either players or staff from another game purposely attempted to sabotage the site. Those meanies!

When Bootleggers changed server hosts a few weeks ago, Sabin believes that these people “took advantage of certain security weaknesses” and attacked the WWW and Database servers.

Because of this, Bootleggers has returned to a bigger and more “reputable” host. This host provides Bootleggers with “a hardware firewall, greater security services, faster network response times”. As a result, Bootleggers (should) now be protected. It seems to have done the job, as Bootleggers has not suffered from any sort of lag or downtime since this change.

However, changing hosts was not a wholly smooth ride. Problems with the BootCast and the Verification Codes cropped up. The Verification Codes were stuck for a few days, but have now been fixed. Sabin told me then that the BootCast is fixed, but there do still seem to be problems. Many people are pondering over what “BootCast (Unknown)” means. It’s safe to assume that Sabin is working on fixing it and it will be sorted shortly.

I messaged him again a day ago for an update on the lag situation and he told me “The lag/downtime has mostly been resolved”. He said there are a few “residual effects” but that it shouldn’t be any different from before Bootleggers changed hosts. He assured me that he will be working on those residual effects within the week. Now, personally, I hardly understood anything he meant! I’m no computer expert. But it seems like Sabin knows what he is doing and Bootleggers should be running the same as always for now.
