When I login to Bootleggers each day, I take a quick stroll to the game forum to see if anything interesting has happened during my time away. For the first week or two of our current round, threads in the game forum were pretty consistent. Crews were recruiting, stats were being posted, dumb questions were being asked and everyone was focused on who was going to be the first to make that next rank. As organized crimes became available, I began to notice a new daily addition to the game forum.
This new thread would say something like Dont OC with so and so or So and so is a scammer. I would usually view this thread and each time I found the results to be the same. Someone had joined an OC, only to receive no percent of the payout. As time continued to go by, more and more of these threads made an appearance in the forums. Like many other players, I sit back and laugh at these threads. If you find this behavior to be offensive, this is the part where I suggest you read another article. Lets discuss the currently popular OC scam.
The OC scam is anything but elaborate and consists of two parties. The first party or alleged suspect is the leader of the OC. The second party, who for the sake of argument will be called the victim, is the player who receives no percent of the payout. How does the scam work? The player is invited to join an OC, and in most cases told that they will receive a certain percent. The leader then asks the player to purchase their equipment and get ready. Once all members are ready, the leader sets his or her own percent to 100 and completes the OC. If you arent laughing right now, you have probably been a victim of this scam.
The truth is, in some sick and twisted way I admire the leaders of these OC scams. They do two OCs a day and make anywhere from eighty to three-hundred thousand dollars. No crimes, no booze runs, no gambling needed. I dont support their actions, but I do respect the fact that these players are making way more cash in a given day then I am, without having to do hardly any work. Just find three people, convince them to buy their equipment and voila, easy money!
As for the people who are constantly complaining in the forums about getting scammed, I have no sympathy for you. I understand that some of you are new, which makes this a lesson learned the hard way. For the rest of you, how long have you been playing this game? Its not rocket science really. You NEVER, let me repeat that again, NEVER should buy your equipment and click the ready button until you are looking at a finalized percent for the OC that you are in. If the leader tells you to get ready, feel free to send him a message asking to set the percents. The worst that can happen is he / she refuses and kicks you out of the OC. Yes, you now have to try to find a new one to join, but you also still have your cash. If you are dumb enough to go ahead and buy your equipment and get ready, dont go complaining to everyone else on here that you were scammed. You are just as much of a suspect as you are a victim. This scam cannot physically happen to you if you wait until you have a finalized percent. Its that simple. Anyone on here will explain that to you.
That ladies and gentlemen, is the ugly truth. As always I would like to take a moment to thank each of you for taking the time to read our articles, leave feedback and rate them. We wouldnt have The Buzz if we didnt have dedicated readers.
